Posidonia, sometimes known as seagrass, is a plant adapted to life underwater. It is key to preserving the ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea, preventing coastal erosion, and balancing the presence of CO2 at sea and in the atmosphere. Its function is comparable to that of forests and it is essential for the ecological balance of the marine environment, (purifying and oxygenating) naturally converting CO2 to oxygen in the sea. It improves water quality and is responsible for the amazing turquoise colour and transparency of our waters. The Posidonia seagrass meadows have a fundamental role in the conservation and protection of beaches and sand dunes in our highly fragile coastal areas.
They are so important that the 1000 year old Posidonia Meadows were declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1999. Due to the growth of tourism and recreational navigation, pollution and coastal urbanization thousands of square meters of these underwater meadows have already disappeared as it takes almost 100 years to regenerate each m2 of Posidonia.
LuxChartersIbiza is proud to be actively supporting the Ibiza Preservation Fund (IPF) in the preservation of Posidonia in Ibiza and Formentera. We hope to raise awareness on the issue, gather support from other boat companies and agencies in Ibiza, and be a positive force for change
